Somos Taurus

High impact strength SLA resin

Taurus is the resin we reach for when a part has to survive being used. It gets you thermal and mechanical properties that used to mean going to FDM or SLS, but with the surface finish and the accuracy of stereolithography — and in a charcoal grey that looks like a moulded production part rather than a prototype.

It builds large parts accurately, holds the same properties in X, Y and Z, and cleans up easily. A high heat deflection temperature means it copes with more end-use applications than most resins.

What it’s good at

High strength and genuinely durable, not just stiff

Heat tolerance up to around 90°C

Thermoplastic-like performance, look and feel

Excellent surface finish, isotropic in X, Y and Z

Large accurate parts, easy to finish and clean

Where we use it

Customised end-use parts, not just prototypes

Tough functional prototypes that get handled hard

Under-bonnet automotive parts

Functional testing for aerospace

Low volume connectors and housings for electronics

Not sure yet?

We’ll print you one in Taurus and one in PA12

Same geometry, two materials, so you can bend them, heat them and decide with the part in your hand. We do it all the time — it saves everybody a fortnight of arguing.

Technical data

Typical values for post-cured parts, from the material supplier’s data sheet. Treat them as indicative — geometry, orientation and cure all move the numbers. We’ll test the real part if you need certainty.

Parts we’ve printed in Taurus

Air duct for a hot engine bay

Ran a full test cycle at temperature without softening or warping out of tolerance.

300-off connector housings

Cheaper than a tool for the quantity, and shipped as the finished product.

A 1.2m part in one piece

No bonded joints to explain to the customer, and no seams to fill.

Questions about Taurus

Ask for the engineer who runs the SLA machines rather than a salesperson.

Talk it through

Taurus or PA12 nylon?

Taurus if the surface matters, if the part is big and needs to be one piece, or if it wants to look moulded. PA12 if it needs to flex, take a snap fit or come in at the lowest cost per part at volume.

Can it be painted or plated?

Yes. It sands and primes easily, takes automotive paint well, and we can vacuum metallise or chrome-effect it through our finishers. Plenty of customers leave it charcoal.

Is it UV stable outdoors?

Like most photopolymers it will change colour and get more brittle in sustained sunlight. For long-term outdoor use, paint it or move to nylon — we’ll say so at quote stage.

How quickly can you print one?

Small parts are usually two to three working days including cure and finishing. Tell us the date you need and we’ll tell you straight whether we can hit it.
