Resin or powder?

Nearly every material decision starts here, and it is the one the table above deliberately does not make for you.

Resin — SLA and LCD

A laser or a screen cures liquid resin, layer by layer.

Good at: Fine detail, smooth surfaces straight off the machine, and parts you can finish properly. Clear and castable grades exist here and nowhere else.

Watch for: Resin parts are more brittle than nylon and most grades yellow in sunlight over years. Supports leave marks that need cleaning up.

Uniontech SLA printersHeyGears Reflex rangeDWS jewellery printers

Powder — HP Multi Jet Fusion

A whole bed of nylon powder is fused at once, with no supports at all.

Good at: Parts equally strong in every direction, living hinges that survive, and a price per part that drops sharply once the build is full. This is what production runs go on.

Watch for: A matt, slightly grainy grey finish, and the geometry has to suit a powder bed. Fine cosmetic detail is a resin job.
